“The lightning storm might have done it.”

“Yeah. The question is, what was he doing out in the first place?”

“Vandals? Pranksters?” Katy suggested. “Or a broken lock on the stall door?”

“Damned if I know,” Garrett muttered as he swung the arc of the light through the rainy darkness. “But I sure intend to find out.” He gave the low whistle again.

“I don’t hear the thundering hooves of a big red horse returning to his master’s call,” Katy noted.

“He’s not Trigger.”

A moving shadow caught Katy’s eye. A low, questioning wicker came through the darkness.

“Over there, Garrett.”

“I saw him. You go left and circle slowly in from the other side. Don’t make any sudden moves. Just ease in on him.”

“I know how to handle a spooked horse.”

Garrett grinned briefly. “Sorry. Guess I forgot who I had married. Go get ‘em, cowgirl.”

Katy wrinkled her nose but said nothing as she moved off into the rain.

The process didn’t take long. Red Dazzle seemed relieved more than anything else once he realized who had come after him. His ears came to attention as he identified his old rodeo pal, and after a few muffled snorts and assorted irritated comments he ambled toward Garrett and allowed the rope to be attached to the halter.

Katy’s flanking movement proved unnecessary. By the time she emerged beside Garrett and the horse, it was clear Red Dazzle was disgusted with his night out in the rain and longed only to get home.

“I know the feeling,” Garrett said as Red Dazzle prodded his shoulder. “It’s time we all went home.”

He abruptly reached out and clamped a hand around the nape of Katy’s neck. Her wet hair spilled over his fingers. Pulling her toward him, he kissed her soundly on the mouth and then vaulted lightly up on his horse’s back. “I’ll ride him back. You bring the car. As soon as you get home, hop into a hot shower.”

“All right.”

Garrett saw her safely behind the wheel. As she started to close the door he leaned down. “Drive care-fully, Katy. We’re not far from the house but this road is dangerous on a night like this.”

“Yes, Garrett.” It was sweet of him to be protective, Katy decided. From now on she would take comfort from such things.

“I’ll see you in a few minutes.”

Katy gave one last obedient nod and closed the car door. She sat silently for a moment, savoring the taste of Garrett’s kiss as she watched Red Dazzle move off down the road. The horse was responding to the invisible pressure signals Garrett gave with his knees. Old Red might appear to be half asleep most of the time, but he was, in fact, beautifully trained. Garrett didn’t even need a bridle to guide him.

Man and horse vanished into the rain, taking a shortcut back to the barn, and Katy reached out to switch on the ignition. She drove slowly back to the big house, her mind filled with the import of the decision she had made.

In a way it was like deciding to get married all over again, she thought.
